Open Webinar: Pyrite Weathering Modeling with Phreeqc and Python
Pyrite weathering is one of the most important processes of Acid Mine Drainage and a key issue of the long term environmental performance of reclaimed / abandoned mines. Phreeqc is a software developed by the USGS written in C++ capable of modeling a variety of aqueous geochemical processes and can simulate the principal components of Pyrite weathering as well as the interaction with other mine related species and processes. We have developed an applied case of Pyrite weathering in Phreeqc and Python for a fixed and distributed Oxygen concentration; the Python code runs a Phreeqc simulation for a given concentration and compiles the output as Pandas dataframes. Plots of the concentration of Fe2+ and SO42- with Oxygen concentration are also generated.
Instructor / Instructor:
Saul Montoya M.Sc
Hydrogeologist - Numerical Modeler
Mr. Montoya is a Civil Engineer graduated from the Catholic University in Lima with postgraduate studies in Management and Engineering of Water Resources (WAREM Program) from Stuttgart University – Germany with mention in Groundwater Engineering and Hydroinformatics. Mr Montoya has a strong analytical capacity for the interpretation, conceptualization and modeling of the surface and underground water cycle and their interaction. He is in charge of numerical modeling for contaminant transport and remediation systems of contaminated sites. Inside his hydrological and hydrogeological investigations Mr. Montoya has developed an holistic comprehension of the water cycle, understanding and quantifying the main hydrological dynamic process of precipitation, runoff, evaporation and recharge to the groundwater system.
